The location of Seacoast Bank's first building has an interesting history, including being the scene of the town's first bank robbery by the Ashley Gang in 1915.
The 1912 landmark two-story building at St. Lucie Avenue and Osceola Street in downtown Stuart was the original location of Citizens Bank, precursor to Seacoast Bank, which had moved from Okeechobee to Stuart.
By 1933, Citizens opened in what was then called the Municipal Building, having been bought by the City in 1921. The bank remained there through 1938, when it moved to Haney Circle. Stuart's governmental offices, police and fire departments also were located in the building and relocated in 1954.
At about 4:30 p.m. March 30, 1986, the building, at that time known as Fellowship Hall, became an inferno. Flames gutted the second level as the metal roof of the concrete block and wood frame structure collapsed. The cause was determined to be an electrical problem. Fortunately there were no injuries.
The structure was rebuilt to the exact specifications of the original, with plans drawn by architect Peter Jefferson, at a cost of $140,000 paid from a reconstruction fund established at First National Bank.
Other businesses such as Clix shoes in the 1950s, and more recently, Stuart Locksmith, leased sections of the building. At one time, AA meetings were conducted there. The building was sold in 2015 and was occupied by a restaurant and offices.
Research from newspapers, including The Stuart News, The St. Lucie Tribune and Palm Beach Post; personal interviews with Dale M. Hudson and Dennis S. Hudson Jr.; and the Luckhardt Collection of records and photos.
